Kotara's collection of paintings, drawings and sculpture reflect a fascination with rendering an organic or decorative image out of the strict order of geometric shapes. His abstract work incorporates circular motifs, architectural marks and layering, and are done in varying combinations of pencil, pastels and acrylics. Chalk pastels are used one at a time, in many layers, and are rubbed with cloths, smudged, and erased. The process begins within set guidelines, a structure that slowly gives way to freeform thinking. The result is subjective and expressive, conceptual and imagistic, a way to embrace chaotic transitions, cascading constraints, and a trace of what is absent.
