My painting style draws on both eastern and western traditions. I am interested in the division of space, spatial illusion and the flattening of space, and the use of traditional medium and materials in a muted tonal pallet. Stylistically, the work is informed by many of the 19th century landscape painters like Inness and Ryder and the Hudson River School, as well as the moderns like Rothko and Diebenkorn. Yet the paintings are artifice, mimetic constructs, not a particular place, but rather a state of mind where one is delivered to both a sensual and contemplative experience.
My recent paintings continue to address my concerns regarding spiritual/ environmental/psychological issues and our vanishing landscape. The rendering of earth and water in the form of wetlands, rivers, streams, lakes and oceans is a constant reminder of the “idea of landscape” as a cultural bellwether that continually informs us.
