Jeffrey Long comes from the lineage of painters standing at the point at which pure abstraction meets the representational. Long has organically embraced myriad influences and practices from the annals of art history, from classical Asian wood-block prints to American Pop. Though clearly related to archetypal American traditions, the work strongly resonates with the lean and spare atmosphere of Japanese art. In this, Long finds a visual and spiritual correlation between the tenets of Modernism and ancient art. There is a sense of language created by Long’s use of collage and layering -- color creates territories of discord and rhythm that play off one another. Paint, gold leaf, beeswax and found objects contribute to this process, creating a code of disparate elements that reveal new levels of narrative and poetic understanding.
