I'm so excited to install this dynamic new exhibition in the newly re-designed Lobby Gallery at 499 Park Avenue @ 59th St., New York City. The Lobby Gallery has been closed since September, 2014 while the Lobby underwent an extensive renovation. Robert Swain's monumental color grid paintings are on view in the at the newly re-designed Lobby Gallery by Pei Cobb from October 5, 2015 - June 17, 2016.
This is the first opportunity to see the paintings in New York. They originally debuted at The Santa Monica Museum of Art in 2014. This exhibition features three paintings from that exhibition.
A review of Swain’s paintings in Art in America commented, "For over four decades, Robert Swain has used painting to examine color as a phenomenological experience. . . Having long studied the role that context plays in color perception, Swain makes grid-based paintings in which each square is given its own color, forming columns and rows that chart transitions between hues, values and levels of saturation. . . Balancing objectivity and subjectivity, analysis and intuition, Swain humanizes the effort to quantify the rainbow. ”.
The Lobby Gallery is open to the public Monday - Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM.
